The Giver Quartet Inspires Young and Old Alike (Contains some Spoilers)

The Giver Quartet Review

As part of my voluntary writers’ group homework, I was told to read several books in the same genre as my own novel to get a sense of pace, structure, style, and so forth. A book with a strikingly similar word count, series length, genre, and audience is The Giver by Lois Lowry.

I find The Giver and its sequels to be a moving, thought-provoking set of stories for readers of any age. Here are some of my thoughts on the four books in The Giver Quartet.

Thoughts on DC Comics’ Convergence Special (Contains Spoilers)

Thoughts on DC Comics' Convergence

For the last 8 weeks, many of DC Comics’ main titles pressed the pause button for a 2 month special called Convergence. When Brainiac pits cities from various timelines against each other in a battle to the death, heroes must band together with others from across the Multiverse or face the destruction of their universe – or every universe!

Gotham season one review

The following review contains spoilers for Fox’s Gotham Season One.

Fox’s Gotham wrapped up it’s first season last week with the airing of episode 22 “All Happy Families Are Alike.” The season has showcased some of the incredible talent of the show’s cast, particularly among the younger actors. While many episodes were solid and certain scenes outstanding, there are some lackluster and underwhelming elements of the first season. Let’s take a closer look at all Gotham has to offer so far.

22 Things I Did While 22

Thoughts and Opinions

Things I Did WhileSome of you may have noticed I’ve fallen behind in my blogging lately. That’s due in part to my taking on a second job, and in part because of some of the things on this list.

In an effort to get back to blogging regularly and because I turn 23 tomorrow, I thought this would be a great opportunity to share a list I’ve compiled of 22 Things I Did While 22. So, in no particular order, here are some notable (and not-so-notable) goals, accomplishments, and experiences of mine from throughout the last year:

Darth Vader #4 Continues to Impress (Spoiler-Free Review)

Books/Graphic Novels

Darth Vader 4

This Wednesday I went straight after work to my neighborhood comic book store to pick up the latest issue of Marvel’s Darth Vader solo series. Just as the with the first 3 issues, the story continues to build and continues to impress me. Doctor Aphra gains new depth and we are reminded that Darth Vader is not as emotionally robotic as his suit or threatening reputation would have us believe as they head to Geonosis where an insect-like queen has attempted to revive her culture with an army of droids.

The next issue won’t be out until May, but I’m actually okay with that. If Marvel continues churning out these awesome Star Wars comic books every single week, my wallet will be running empty.

What did you think of Darth Vader #4? Leave your thoughts in the comments and thanks for reading.

Catching up on Comics: Darth Vader #1-3 (Spoiler-Free Review)

Books/Graphic Novels

Darth Vader #3

Between traveling to San Diego and L.A. a few weeks back, work, and editing my first novel, I’m afraid my blog has suffered a bit of neglect the last few weeks. Between the stack of comics I armed myself with in L.A. for the flight back and the new releases of the last few weeks, as well as my library loans, I’ve been consuming a ton of comic books that I can’t wait to review. So I’ll be playing catch-up with those reviews throughout this week, starting with one of the best series out right now: Star Wars, Darth Vader.

Princess Leia #2 Review (Spoiler-Free)

Books/Graphic Novels

Leia 2 cover

Today the second issue of Marvel’s Princess Leia series was released. Unlike Issue #1, which felt lackluster, the plot picks up with #2. I’m sorry to say that the princess’ solo series still lacks the quality of the main Star Wars comic book series and the recent Darth Vader solo series, but I’m holding out hope it will get there by the end.
